Pigs as Cargo | ブタは貨物のように
〈展覧会情報〉
インテリア、窓辺にある2つのガラス花瓶、あるいはすてきな木張りの床の縁を用意立てもせず、白く塗られているのはなぜか、プロ仕様ではないものの、よいもので、そこには感情があります。練習を続けて、しっぽたち。こうして和音の響きが書かれ、ドリップ、ドリップ、ドリップ、ナーニヒニニンナ。これはマークの音で、誰かほかの人の電話、ディーリップに閉じ込められて、ブランティップ。それからコイルとE8があって……ハハハハハ。艶やかなサックスとくぼみ。ドアには視界のカバー、納屋のスズメバチ、フライト用のスウェットパンツ、木の花、金属の鉢。ストレッチマーク、背中のスクラッチ。布カバーはスケールを上り、あのプールまで車を走らせ、コンクリートを引っぱっていく。藤の花を積み上げて。新しいラグ、マスカラ、猫の爪、青みがかったメガネ、食洗機。
ジョナサンの作品の主題はすべて、個人的な経験や家族の伝承から生まれています。作品は独立してあるものの、組み合わさることでオープン・エンドな物語を生み出し、それぞれの要素が無数の意味合いを帯びていきます。飛行機が暗示するのは旅、逃避、レジャー、セックス……、そして飛行することは感情、薬物依存、あるいはただのイノセントなフライトのメタファーとなります。また、ブタはかわいさ、警察、散らかり、ベーコン、知性、死を連想させもします。

〈アーティスト・ステートメント〉
2017年、アーティストのサラ・ブレイマンが「メディウム」サイズの飛行機というアイデアをくれました。そのプロンプトは当時の私には完璧なものでした。行き詰まり、自分自身に疲れて、トラウマは使用通貨のようなっていたのです。やっと失敗する言い訳ができて、ただ絵具を押しやるだけになりました。私は父のベッド一面にブタを描きはじめ、安っぽいブタの絵のプリントを飾りつけましたが、本当に気に入ってくれました。
ステレオタイプ、トロープ、ユーモア。私は「あり得ないこと（ブタに翼が生えたら）」とは、露骨すぎるので言いはしません。でも、自分の作品について話すときに、人に押しつけてしまう重荷を少しでも取り除いてくれるようなメタファーは好ましいものです。そこにはトラウマも、精神疾患もあります。でも、私はそのトラウマから抜け出しました。すばらしい人生と家族がいます。もともと飛行機とブタを一緒に見せるつもりはありませんでしたが、今こうして見せられることがとてもうれしいです。
くだらないジョーク、ダジャレ。私はアート界で多くの橋を燃やしてきました。精神的な問題、欲、嫌なやつだったこと……。ブタにはたくさんの意味があります。幸運、警察、強欲、散らかり、かわいさ、「動物農場」。しかし、飛行機やブタをどう見るか、見る人の視点を濁らせたくはありません。でも、これらの飛行機を作ってきたなかで、ブタのドローイングがほかの人にとって何を意味するのか、聞いたことはほとんどありませんでした。私は有名ではないし、よく知られたアーティストでもありません。何をやっても、何も起こりはしません。ウェイティング・リストも、コレクターの支えもなく。

Jeffrey Chiedo（ジェフリー・チエド）
東京を拠点に活動するアーティスト、批評家、コレクター、キュレーター、そして論争好き。Motus Fort（モータス・フォート）のディレクター。一時的にシカゴ美術館附属美術大学(SAIC）、スクール・オブ・ビジュアル・アーツ（SVA）を経て、イェール大学でMFA（美術学修士）を取得。メディウムを問わず制作を行っているが、オンライン上の情報は最小限にとどめている。さらなる議論やコメントがあれば、Motus.Fort@gmail.comまで気軽に連絡を。

〈Exhibition Information〉
Home decor, two glass vases on a windowsill, doesn’t prep or organize edges fascinated wood floors, why are they painted white, non pro way, nice, you have feelings. Keep practicing, tails. This is how chords sound written, dlip, dlip, dlip, nahnihinininna. This is the sounds of marks, phone of someone else, clammed up in a deeelip, bluntip. Then there were coils and E8’s…hahahahahaha. Smooth sax with glamour and ding. Door had the sight cover, wasps in the shed flight sweat pants, wooden flower, metal pots. Stretch marks, scratch your back. Slip covers go up those scales, drive to that pool and pull that concrete. Stack up that wisteria. New rug mascara, cat claws, blue tint glasses, dishwasher.
All of Jonathan’s subject matter springs from personal experience and family legend. The individual works stand alone, but when combined, they generate open-ended scenarios where each component takes on myriad connotations. Planes can imply travel, escape, leisure, sex…then flying is a metaphor for many emotions, chemical dependency, or just innocent flight. While pigs can be cute, cops, messy, bacon, smart, and death…

〈Artist Statement〉
In 2017, the artist Sarah Braman gave me the idea of “medium” sized planes. The prompt was perfect for me at the time. I was stuck, I was tired of myself, my use of trauma as currency. Now I had an excuse to fail, to just push paint around. I started to draw pigs, kept a cheesy print of a painting with pigs in his bedroom across from his bed, which he really loved.
Stereotypes, tropes, and humor. I promise I never say “when pigs fly” because that would be too obvious. But I like metaphors that can eliminate some of the baggage I put on people when I talk about my work. There is trauma, mental illness, but I also broke out of that trauma, I have an amazing life and family. I never intended to show the pigs and planes together—I am so happy to do so now.
Bad jokes, dad jokes. I have burned many bridges in the art world, mental illness, greed, being an asshole, Pigs have many meanings, good fortune, cops, greed, messy, cute, animal farm, I dont want to muddy up someone’s view of the planes or pigs. But as I make these planes, I have only heard a few responses as to what the planes or pig drawings mean to others. I am not famous, or a well-known artist, I can do anything and nothing happens, I do not have a waitlist, or a collector base.

Jeffrey Chiedo
Tokyo-based Artist, critic, collector, curator, and shit-disturber. Director of Motus Fort. Chiedo achieved his MFA from Yale University after stints at the dubious School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and the School of Visual Arts(SVA).
