革命のあり方を示したウラジーミル・レーニンの著書「何をなすべきか？（Что делать?）」（1902年）に着想を得て丹羽良徳が問いかけるトークイベントでは、丹羽の渡墺（2016年）以後の活動を振り返りながら、文化研究・キュレーター・批評家の山本浩貴とともにアート実践とキュレーションの可能性や同時代を生きるアーティストとキュレーターの共闘や役割、社会介入や政治介入のあり方を探る。2015年に刊行された『歴史上歴史的に歴史的な共産主義の歴史』（Art-Phil）、『過去に公開した日記を現在の注釈とする：天麩羅』（UMISHIBAURA）の10周年記念イベント。

登壇者プロフィール
丹羽良徳
アーティスト。1982年愛知県生まれ。ウィーン在住。スローガンのようで自己説明的なタイトルが付けられたパフォーマンスを公共空間や政治空間で行い、その一部始終を映像記録に収めることで、我々の暮らす社会制度の外縁、もしくはその行為が発生させる軋轢や問題などを通して顕になる社会通念や価値信条の源流を探索する作品を作る。最近のプロジェクトに、オーストリアの家庭に残されているナチズムに関連する遺品廃棄をめぐるプロジェクト「私的空間からアドルフ・ヒットラーを引き摺り出す, 2018」など。近年の展覧会は「第8回横浜トリエンナーレ」（横浜美術館、2024)、「2024アジアン・アート・ビエンナーレ—息を止める方法」（国立台湾美術館、台中、 2024）、「憤慨せよ！社会的怒りの時代の芸術」（クンストパラスト美術館、 デュッセルドルフ、 2020）など。IKG – Internationales Künstlergremium（国際芸術家委員会、ケルン、ドイツ）のメンバー。

山本浩貴
文化研究者。1986年千葉県生まれ。実践女子大学文学部美学美術史学科准教授。一橋大学社会学部卒業後、ロンドン芸術大学にて修士号・博士号取得。2013～2018年、ロンドン芸
術大学トランスナショナルアート研究センター博士研究員。韓国・光州のアジアカルチャーセンター研究員、香港理工大学ポストドクトラルフェロー、東京藝術大学大学院国際芸術創造研究科助教、金沢美術工芸大学美術工芸学部美術科芸術学専攻講師を経て、2024年より現職。単著に『現代美術史 欧米、日本、トランスナショナル』（中央公論新社、2019)、『ポスト人新世の芸術』（美術出版社、2022）、『12ヶ月でわかる現代アート』（美術出版社、2025）。共著に『レイシズムを考える』（清原悠編、共和国、2021）、『新しいエコロジーとアート──「まごつき期」としての人新世』（長谷川祐子編、以文社、2022）、『この国（近代日本）の芸術――〈日本美術史〉を脱帝国主義化する』（小田原のどかとの共編著、月曜社、2023） など。

クリエーション・ユニット Art-Phil、アート・ギャラリー／イベント・スペース monade contemporary｜単子現代。都市経営修士。編集／批評を通してアート・哲学・社会の視点から多様なコミュニケーション一般のあり方を探求するとともに、キュレーター／アートマネジャー／ギャラリストとして現在の状況に応答するための展示活動を行っている。2015年に、丹羽良徳『歴史上歴史的な共産主義の歴史』（Art-Phil、2015）を編集・出版。最近の寄稿に、「遭遇はキュレーションに先立つ──批評の実践からアートのエコノミーをつくること」（2025, Art Scape）など。

What Is to Be Done? — How Can Solidarity and Collective Struggle Be Possible in the Field of Artistic Expression?
Artist Yoshinori Niwa, drawing inspiration from Vladimir Lenin’s What Is to Be Done? (1902), a seminal text proposing a framework for revolutionary praxis, initiates a talk event that reexamines the question in the field of artistic expression. Featuring cultural researcher, curator, and critic Hiroki Yamamoto, the talk revisits Niwa’s activities since his stay in Austria in 2016, delving into the potential of art practice and curation, the collective struggles and intertwined roles of artists and curators today, and the ways art can act as a form of social and political intervention. The event also marks the 10th anniversary of Niwa’s publications Historically Historic Historical History of Historical Communism (Art-Phil, 2015) and Publishing Tempura (UMISHIBAURA, 2015).

Speaker Profiles
Yoshinori Niwa
Born in 1982, Japan. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. At the intersections of performance, video, and installation, Yoshinori Niwa’s practice explores the transformative potentialities of social interventions within the public sphere and beyond. Animated by the urgency to draw new and uncharted lines of social possibilities, he radically critiques the premises that platform contemporary society. Interrogating the positionality of the social prescriptive normativity – to which he juxtaposes a nonsensical vernacular, mainly composed of absurd scenarios – his works employ self-explanatory titles, echoing the inherent performativity of the social interventions themselves. These performances extensively navigate the perpetual negotiation between social discourse and power structures, between the micro-perspective of the individual and the choral agency allocated to the broader community, reconfiguring social constructs and proposing alternative frameworks. His work has been exhibited internationally; recent group exhibitions include Withdrawing Adolf Hitler from a Private Space (2018), which deals with the disposal of Nazi-related heirlooms left in Austrian households, 8th Yokohama Triennale—Wild Grass: Our Lives (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2024), 2024 Asian Art Biennial—How to Hold Your Breath (National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, 2024), and TIME FOR OUTRAGE! ART IN TIMES OF SOCIAL ANGER (Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, 2020). Niwa is a member of IKG – Internationales Künstlergremium (International Artists Committee, Cologne, Germany).
Hiroki Yamamoto
Cultural studies scholar. Born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1986. Associate Professor in the Department of Aesthetics and Art History, Faculty of Humanities, Jissen Women’s University. After earning a B.A. in Sociology from Hitotsubashi University, obtained an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of the Arts London. From 2013 to 2018, Yamamoto was a Research Fellow at the University of the Arts London’s Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation. Yamamoto has also held research and teaching positions at the Asia Culture Center (Gwangju, South Korea), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Graduate School of Global Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, and Kanazawa College of Art, and assumed the current position in 2024. Yamamoto’s publications include the monographs A History of Contemporary Art: Ero-America, Japan, and the Transnational (Chuokoron-Shinsha, 2019), Art of the Post-Anthropocene (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, 2022), and Understanding Contemporary Art in 12 Months (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, 2025). Yamamoto is also co-author of Thinking about Racism (ed. Yu Kiyohara, Kyowakoku, 2021), New Ecologies and Art: The Anthropocene as a Time of Bewilderment (ed. Yuko Hasegawa, Ibunsha, 2022), and Art in Modern Japan: Toward a De-Imperialized History of “Japanese Art” (co-edited with Nodoka Odawara, Getsuyosha, 2023).
F. Atsumi
Creation unit Art-Phil, and art gallery/event space monade contemporary | 単子現代. MA in Urban Management. Through editing and criticism, explores diverse modes of communication through the lens of art, philosophy, and society, while also engaging in exhibition practices as a curator, art manager, and gallerist to respond to the situation at present. In 2015, Atsumi edited and published Historically Historic Historical History of Communism by Yoshinori Niwa (Art-Phil, 2015). Recent writings include “Encounter Precedes Curation: Creating an Art Economy through the Practice of Criticism” (Art Scape, 2025), among others.

Based in Tokyo, runs UMISHIBAURA, a publishing label focused on texts and literary style.
