京都とシェフィールド（英国）の2つの民話を元に制作されたパフォーマンス作品「That Long Moonless Chase / その長い月のない追跡」関連ワークショップを下記の通り開催します。金沢でのオープンラボで制作した新作ショートパフォーマンスを発表するとともに、参加者にゲーム、会話、コラージュを通じ民話を新しい物語た音作品に進化させるワークショップに参加してもらいます。7月は祇園祭を向かえる京都の歴史に触れながら、新しい京都の民話を創りましょう！

「That Long Moonless Chase / その長い月のない追跡」
出演｜尾角典子（映像）＋ ヘレン・パパイオアノ（サウンド）
メディアアーティストの尾角典子と作曲家・演奏家のヘレン・パパイオアノによって共同制作されたミックスメディア・アニメーションと音像パフォーマンスです。これは写真、エッチング素材、水彩絵具、デジタルエフェクトを組み合わせたストップフレームアニメーションと、電子音楽、バリトンサックス、録音された声を組み合わせたシュールな映像音響パフォーマンスです。音楽は、浮遊感のある繊細な音景から、迫力のあるサックスの轟音や重いドローン、産業的なビートまで幅広い表現を展開します。英国シェフィールドの「ガブリエルの猟犬」と京都本願寺の「水吹き銀杏」という民間伝承を日本語と英語の両言語で構成されるこの作品は、2つのテキストをAIによるオンライン翻訳エンジンでループさせることにより発生した翻訳エラーによる物語の歪みを通じて、物語は新たな形に変容し、字幕や録音音声の意味の側面も侵食されていきます。デジタル時代における相互理解の可否や、世代や文化を超えた民話の集合的な記憶とその歴史的な文脈との関係を掘り下げます。この作品は、2021年10月に英国SENSORIAフェスティバルで初演され、その後イギリスの様々な地域で上演されてきました。今年2023年、金沢にて日本初上演、その後京都・東京とまわり、それに加えワークショップやトークイベントも開催します。

“That Long Moonless Chase” Workshop
Following their trip to Kanazawa, Noriko Okaku and Helen Papaioannou present their most recent development of a new audiovisual work based on AI-mediated exchange and evolution of folklore and regional stories. Following this, they will lead a workshop relating to the themes in their audiovisual work “That Long Moonless Chase”, which is based on two folk stories from Kyoto and Sheffield (UK), inviting participants to take part in activities which explore and evolve local folklore into new stories and soundworks, through games, conversation and collage. Let’s create a new Kyoto folktale together while experiencing the history of the city, where the Gion Festival will be held in July!
No previous experience is required!

That Long Moonless Chase / その長い月のない追跡 is a mixed-media animation and audiovisual performance collaboratively created by media artist Noriko Okaku and composer/musician Helen Papaioannou. This is a surrealistic audiovisual performance combining mixed media stop-motion animation that incorporates photography/etching materials/watercolor paint/digital effects and music for electronics/baritone saxophone/recorded voices, ranging from suspended, delicate soundscapes to blasting textures of booming sax with heavy drones and industrial beats. The work explores the traditions and processes of storytelling in the digital age, generating texts by looping the original two stories through multiple AI-powered online translation engines in Japanese and English. Through the distortion of the narrative caused by translation errors, the tales are transformed into new stories, with the semantic aspect of the subtitles and recorded voices being eroded. The work delves into the process of folk storytelling with digital/online tools, and its relation to the collective memory of folk tales and their historical contexts, which transcend generations and cultures. This piece has been performed across the UK and the original iteration was commissioned by Sensoria / British Council (FAMLAB), with animation from Noriko Okaku, music, sound, production from Helen Papaioannou and sound design elements from Başar Ünder.
