〈ステートメント〉
ビデオ、パフォーマンス、紙へのドローイングなど、さまざまな作品を集めた「On Drawing（描くことについて）」は、2016年に始まったプロジェクトで、メンデスはアートと科学の領域における思考とドローイングのつながりを探求している。
「On Drawing」というビデオ作品は、メンデスが読み書きのできないフランス系モロッコ人女性ミナ・ペグリエとの撮影とともに始まる。彼女は日常生活を送るための手段として、絵を描いている。「On drawing」では、ペグリエは絵と電話番号のコレクションで構成されたアドレス帳を見せながら、それぞれの項目にまつわるストーリーを語る。ビデオを見ていると、記憶の整理や自分のアイデンティティに合った文法をつくるということにといて思考プロセスの根源を思い起こさせてくれる。
「On Drawing」は、Natbrainlab / Kings College Londonの神経科学者との共同研究によって開発された。メンデスは日本で、東アジアの人々がドローイングをとおしてどのように思考しているのか、またその土地の哲学／文化（レンマ科学、対称的思考、アニミズム、神道）が脳の発達にどの程度影響を与えているのかについて研究している。

monade contemporary | 単子現代では、アナ・メンデスによる個展「描くことについて | On Drawing」を開催します。
メンデスはこれまで、個人の思考や行動と社会状況や世界動向とのかかわりにについてリサーチし、ほかのアーティストや科学者、一般の人々との協働作業を行いながら、ドローイング、ビデオ、インスタレーション、キュレーション、出版などの活動をとおして、考察を深めてきました。近年、日本、台湾、韓国などの東アジア地域で定期的に活動し、植民地時代の遺産、哲学や東洋と西洋の間にある精神性、あるいはアニミズムと神道について探求しています。
本展では、メンデスが2014年に制作した読み書きのできないフランス系モロッコ人女性のドローイングにかかわるリサーチ・プロジェクトの成果を発表します。絵と電話番号でできたアドレス帳を追いながら流れる語りとドローイングという行為と線の動きからは、記憶の断片が自己と他者の身体をとおしてイメージとなり、文法が生まれるいきいきとしたプロセスをたどることができるかのようです。
記憶が他者とのかかわりのなかで身体をとおして表現されるとき、想起のイメージはどのように描かれ、かたちをとり、音声とともに伝えられることになるのでしょうか。文字という言語の体制がない深淵の世界から浮かび上がる、生存の技法としてのイメージの発明にご参加ください。

アナ・メンデスはロンドンとストックホルムを拠点に活動するライター、ビジュアル・アーティスト。ビデオ、パフォーマンス、写真、インスタレーションにより、彫刻、言語、記憶、アイデンティティといったテーマを探求している。2019年より、メンデスは東アジア（日本、台湾、韓国）で定期的に活動し、東洋と西洋の間の植民地遺産、哲学や精神性、とりわけアニミズムや神道について考察を深めている。

〈Statement〉
Gathering different works on video, performance and drawing on paper, ‘On Drawing’ is a project initiated in 2016, in which Mendes explores the connection between thinking and drawing, in the realms of arts and science.
It departs from the video ‘On Drawing’, which Mendes filmed with Mina Pegourie, a French-Moroccan woman who cannot read or write. Thus, she uses drawing as a tool for everyday life. With ‘On drawing’, Pegourie shows her address book, composed of a collection of drawings and phone numbers, telling the story behind each entry. Watching the video, one is reminded of the very foundations of the thinking process, in terms of organization of memory, and creation of a grammar that fits our identity.
‘On Drawing’ has been developed in collaboration with neuroscientists from the Natbrainlab /Kings College London. In Japan, Mendes will explore how people in East Asia think through drawing and to what extent local philosophy/culture (lemma science, symmetrical thinking, animism, Shintoism) might impact the development of the brain.

monade contemporary | 単子現代 is pleased to present “On Drawing,” a solo exhibition by Ana Mendes.
Mendes has been researching the interplay of individual thought and behavior with social conditions and global trends, working collaboratively with other artists, scientists, and the public, and deepening her reflections through drawing, video, installation, curation, and publication. In recent years, she has worked regularly in East Asia, including Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, exploring colonial legacies, philosophy and spirituality between East and West, or animism and Shintoism.
In this exhibition, Mendes presents the artwork from her 2014 research project on the drawings in collaboration with an illiterate French-Moroccan women. Through the act of drawing and the movement of the line and the narrative that follows the address book made of drawings and phone numbers, it seems as if we can trace the lively process by which fragments of memory become images through the bodies of self and others, and a grammar is born.
When memory is expressed through the body in relation to others, how are the images of memory depicted, shaped, and conveyed with sound-voice? Please join us in the invention of images as art of survival that emerge from the abyss of a world without the system of textual language.

Ana Mendes is a writer and visual artist living and working in London and Stockholm. She works in video, performance, photography, installation and sculpture to explore subjects such as language, memory and identity. Since 2019, Mendes has worked regularly in East Asia (Japan, Taiwan and South Korea), exploring colonial legacies, philosophy and spirituality between the East and the West, namely Animism and Shintoism.
